Improving the Livelihoods of Smallholders in Indonesia: The AI Opportunity
Project year: 2025

The project is commissioned by GSMA Mobile for Development and funded by UK International Development, ICENERGY Institute led the primary research for a national assessment of AI-enabled tools for smallholder farmers and small-scale aquaculture producers in Indonesia, in partnership with ANGIN. The mixed-methods study combines desk research with 47 key informant interviews, four focus group discussions, expert roundtables, validation workshops, and field visits across four provinces. Four AI applications are tested directly with farmers, engaging nearly 200 participants from 85 organizations. The study identifies 20 high-potential AI use cases, developed an investment prioritization framework, assessed AI-related risks, and produced practical recommendations for donors, agritech companies, and government agencies.
